Cinema Studies

Cinema Studies is a vibrant area of study that has grown in the last five years to become an important part of the Spanish and Latin American Studies program. We offer students the chance to learn about a range of films from both Spain and Latin America as well as the film histories of a number of Hispanic nations, while fostering their critical and analytical skills. Not only do we offer a unit dedicated exclusively to the study of the films of Spain and Latin America (SPN2280/3280) we also include film as an integral part of a range of other units.

In the culture components that form part of all language levels film is often used as a base text for the analysis of wider cultural issues. More recently, the intermediate language levels (SPN2030/2040) have adopted a new strategy of using contemporary film in the language teaching context, which has proved both successful and popular with the students.

The program also offers supervision for honours and higher degree (PhD and Masters) students who wish to further develop their research in the cinemas of Spain and the Latin American nations. We have a number of students who have worked on a range of cinema-based topics covering diverse nations and topics.

The Spanish and Latin America Studies program has its own Cinema Studies specialist, Dr Sarah McDonald who is currently working in the area of gender representation in contemporary cinema.
