Brazilian Studies at Monash

Brazilian studies is a dynamic area of research that concerns itself with the exploration of Brazilian cinema, cultural studies, history, literature and politics.

Brazil is the largest nation in Latin America with a population of around 180 million people. While often left out of university courses that focus on Latin America Monash is committed to giving its students the most rounded introduction to the region possible and as such Brazil is included as a integral component in undergraduate studies that focus on Latin America.

Although the Portuguese language is not yet formally taught within the Spanish and Latin American Studies Program, several units contain substantial Brazilian Studies Modules, including SPN2280/3280 Spanish and Latin American Culture through Film and SPN3560 Culture and Identity in Latin America.

Monash University offers higher degrees by research (PhD and Masters only) in Brazilian cinema, cultural and literary studies. The Spanish and Latin America Studies program has its own Brazil specialist, Dr Sarah McDonald who works in the area on contemporary cinema and literature. If you are interested in undertaking a PhD or Masters program in Brazilian Studies, please contact Dr McDonald directly on Sarah.McDonald@arts.monash.edu.au or +61 3 9905 9134.
