Remembering the Great War: Letter from the Dean
19 March 2007
Dear Colleague,
It gives me great pleasure to draw your attention to a number of special events Monash University Arts has organised. In this month’s Bulletin, you’ll find a notice advertising Professor Bruce Scates’ lecture on Remembering the Great War. I know teachers are always looking for new perspectives on that terrible catastrophe and as a prize winning teacher himself Bruce has prepared a lecture that is bound to inspire you and your students. "Return to Gallipoli" will be held at the Shrine of Remembrance, on Thursday 26 April at 11.00 and I believe the Shrine is organising further sessions for schools as well.
I am also pleased to announce the Inaugural Lecture in the Monash Arts Public Lecture Series. This year, Professor Ken Inglis and Professor Jay Winter, world renowned historians and the authors of many books you use in senior classes, will discuss Memory and Commemoration. Again, it’s appropriate that Monash hosts this important event at the Shrine. This second lecture is set for Monday 21 May, 5.30 for a 6.00 start and you can reserve a place all these free events through the Shrine on 9654 8415.
I do hope you can join me on one or all of these great occasions. As the new Dean of Monash University’s Faculty of Arts and as a HTA member, I am committed to building stronger links with my colleagues in secondary education. I hope you will see my Faculty as a partner in education and a resource you can always draw on.
With very best wishes
Professor Rae Frances
Dean
Faculty of Arts
