Undergraduate Studies in Linguistics

The Linguistics Program offers a wide range of units. Most second and third units are offered every second year, and many are offered in the flexible mode (by off campus teaching / distance education). Most second/third year units require a first year linguistics sequence LIN1010 + LIN1020 to have been taken prior to enrolment.

Requirements for a Major or a Minor in Linguistics

The course of study for the Bachelor of Arts (a total of 144 points) includes:

  1. an arts major (normally 48 points)
  2. an arts minor (normally 24 points)
  3. another first-year arts sequence (12 points)
  4. another 12 points of Arts at any year level

These four requirements total 96 points. Additional points may be taken in disciplines inside or outside the Faculty of Arts. A minimum of 36 points must be taken at third-year level.

Minor sequence

A minor sequence in Linguistics consists of the 1st Year sequence LIN1010 and LIN1020 plus 12 points (two units) at 2nd or 3rd Year level.

Major sequence

A major sequence in Linguistics consists of the 1st Year sequence LIN1010 and LIN1020 plus 36 points at second + third year levels, at least 12 points (two units) must be taken in second year and at least 18 points (three units) must be taken at third year level. The additional unit may be taken at either level. Students who complete a major in linguistics with an average of 70% or better qualify to enrol in honours in linguistics.

It is recommended that students who major in Linguistics will have (or have had) the experience of learning or acquiring a language other than their first language. Students who do not otherwise meet this expectation should take LIN2370 /LIN3370 Aboriginal languages of Australia OR LIN2070 /LIN3070 Eastern Austronesian languages as part of their major sequence.

Students majoring in Linguistics will have passed at least one unit from each of the following four groups, totalling 24 points in all. The other two units (12 points) may come from any of the four groups. Students are advised to plan their courses with a faculty advisor to ensure that they have the appropriate combinations to achieve their goal.
