What is Open Learning?
Open Universities Australia is a new concept in distance education. Open Universities Australia is the link between the students and the universities. It coordinates the registration of students in graduate and undergraduate units from many universities and provides administrative and other support for both the universities and the students. Unlike campus-based university study, Open Universities units in Applied Linguistics have no prerequisites and no limit on student numbers. Open Universities adds another choice to the higher education menu and is particularly appealing because it allows students to study at home through a variety of media including television, radio, audio and video tapes, personal computers, and conventional print material.
Please note that only graduate courses are available by Open Universities Australia through Linguistics at Monash.
The three courses offered through Open Universities Australia are the Master of Applied Linguistics, the Postgraduate Diploma of Applied Linguistics and the Graduate Certificate of Applied Linguistics.
The structure of the three courses and details of units can be found on the Open Universities Australia Linguistics Program site.
Choosing whether to do a Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Applied Linguistics by Open Universities Australia or by Off-Campus learning (Distance Education)
The main advantage of Open Universities units is that students are not required to meet entry requirements in order to do the units and so they are easily available to anyone who is interested. Application forms, costs, help with fees and other information regarding study through Open Universities are contained in the Open Universities Australia Handbook available from larger newsagents and bookshops; it is also available on the web.
- The advantage of doing a Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Applied Linguistics by Off-Campus Learning (Distance Education) for students who have a suitable undergraduate degree is that the award of the degree becomes automatic once the units are completed at a satisfactory level. Australian citizens and permanent residents who gain a Commonwealth Supported Place will also find the fees are lower for this version of the course.Find out more about Off-Campus Learning (Distance Education).
