Master of International Development and Environmental Analysis

International Development

Want a post-graduate course that helps you learn to work with others to create a sustainable world?

What a great IDEA!

The Program in International Development and Environmental Analysis (IDEA) is an interdisciplinary initiative of the Faculty of Arts. It is a professionally-oriented course for students from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds who wish to pursue careers or enhance their professional skills in the fields of international development and environmental sustainability.

What is the goal of the IDEA program?

The goal of the IDEA program is to create a new generation of practitioners and scholars who are critically engaged and committed to sustainable development in a global context. Monash University has long been a leader and innovator in internationally-oriented education in Australia, driven by strong research by its world-class academics as well as responsiveness to the political, economic, social and environmental dimensions of global change. The program prepares students to become effective international development professionals who can work collaboratively within and across a wide range of governmental agencies, NGOs, and communities.

What sets IDEA apart from other postgraduate development courses in Australia?

The IDEA Program moves beyond conventional 'development studies' toward a trans-disciplinary approach that examines how biophysical change, economic transformations, and institutional practices interact to reshape social and ecological vulnerability, resilience and sustainability. It aims to create reflective and reflexive professionals who have the ability to work effectively with a wide range of actors in diverse situations. The Program encourages intensive interaction through seminars, group work and practical study that bring together people from different disciplinary backgrounds and professional experiences. An internship component provides an excellent entrée into the world of international development.

Who should take this course?

Students come to this program from diverse academic backgrounds and professional experience. Some choose the program to prepare for a career in international development and environment. Others, who have worked with aid agencies or NGOs, choose IDEA to improve their analytical skills and deepen their understanding of particular development issues or problems. All share a common desire to promote social justice and good environmental governance.
