Scholarships and Prizes

Monash offers a broad variety scholarship and prizes across the full range of courses – undergraduate, honours, graduate coursework and research degrees.

You can find information about these on the relevant Monash and Monash Arts websites listed in the highlight boxes to the right of this page.

  • A good place to begin looking for scholarship opportunities is Scholarships at Monash which lists links to both coursework and graduate research, undergraduate and postgraduate options.
  • If you are looking for a graduate research scholarship you should also explore the MRGS website, including the JASON database (Joint Academic Scholarships Online Network) where you can search for scholarships offered by 30 Australian universities.
  • The comprehensive Arts Current Students Scholarships and Prizes webpage lists both undergraduate and postgraduate (coursework and research) information, including links to prizes not listed on the University-level websites.
  • Monash has a number of prizes that are awarded annually. See the University's Recognition of Excellence Policy for more details.

ECPS Scholarships and Prizes

In addition to the University and Faculty scholarships and prizes the School of English, Communications and Performance Studies offers the following

Scholarships

Prizes

Monash Vice-Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Scholarships

The Monash Vice-Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Scholarships are awarded to commencing Honours students of exceptional calibre who have demonstrated a high level of research potential. The scholarship carries considerable prestige as it is highly competitive and awarded to the very best commencing Honours students across the University. When you apply for honours you are automatically considered for a scholarship.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships

If you are planning to enrol/are already enrolled in a postgraduate research degree then you can apply for a postgraduate research scholarship. Applications are available from the School Office. For information, go to MRGS Scholarships and Grants; if possible, you should also plan to attend the MRGS and Arts Research Scholarship Information Sessions (held annually in September) for tips on how to maximise your chances.

Please note: you need to be easily contactable throughout the scholarship application process as we may need to contact you as a matter of urgency regarding your application and supplementary documentation.

How to apply for a postgraduate research scholarship and course admission at the same time

You need to contact ECPS several months prior to the scholarship application deadline to arrange a supervisor and write a research proposal. We will also be able to advise on the scholarship process so that you will have enough time to gather your documentary evidence. Please note: ECPS can not support last minute scholarship applications for which supervisor arrangements have not been confirmed.

  • To begin, please contact ECPS. You will be asked to submit a pre-application inquiry form which is downloadable from the “How to Apply” section of the Arts Research website.
  • Based on the information you give us we will recommend possible course options and a potential supervisor with whom you can discuss availability and your idea for a thesis.
  • Once you have decided what course you wish to study, agreed on a supervisor and written a research proposal you will need to obtain a Postgraduate Research Scholarship form from the School Office and lodge it with MRGS by the specified deadline.

How to apply for a scholarship once you are already enrolled in a research degree with ECPS

Scholarships are also available to students currently enrolled in a research Masters or PhD at Monash, including those planning to upgrade from a Masters to a PhD.

  • Begin by contacting your main supervisor to discuss scholarship opportunities
  • If your application depends on you having been confirmed or approved to upgrade, request for your panel to meet prior to the scholarship application deadline
  • Contact the ECPS Graduate Studies Officer for a Postgraduate Research Scholarship form and lodge it with MRGS by the specified deadline

English Proficiency

To be eligible for a scholarship you must be eligible for a research degree. This includes meeting the Arts English language proficiency requirements. See English Language Proficiency Requirements: please read carefully as Arts English language proficiency requirements vary from the standard Monash English language proficiency requirements. If you do not meet the Arts English language proficiency requirements and a case can not be made for you your application can not be supported.

H1 Equivalence

All applicants applying for a Postgraduate Research Scholarship must have an H1 or be assessed as being "H1 equivalent". Applicants who must be assessed for equivalence include all applicants applying on the basis of qualifications from overseas (including UK, USA and Canada), Australian or New Zealand graduates who have not been formally graded as HI (these include coursework Masters and degrees awarded prior to formal grading on academic transcripts) and honours or research masters graduates who have achieved an HIIA, but who have substantial research experience/potential (as evidenced by publications, work in the field, etc.).

The case for H1 equivalence has to be made by the School on your behalf. Academic units are encouraged to attach additional documentation (e.g. a publications list) where this supports the claims you have made in your application. The earlier you can provide us with the information to prepare your HIE case the better. Panels occur throughout the year and it is possible to do this ahead of the scholarship period to ensure a smoother process.
