Arts regulations and definitions
This information is to be read in conjunction with the Faculty Degree Regulations which can be found in the current Monash University Calendar.
Students should consult the Areas of Study to determine majors and minors available and core requirements in each discipline.
Campus transfers
When students are offered a place in the Faculty of Arts, it will be for study on a specific campus in a specific course. For example, the Bachelor of Arts degree course is offered on the Clayton, Caulfield, Gippsland and South Africa campuses.
While students may take one unit each semester on another campus without requesting faculty permission, after completing the first year of the Bachelor of Arts, students may wish to transfer to another campus to complete the course. To be eligible to transfer, students are required to have achieved a minimum overall average of `credit' (60%) in their studies.
Students who are seeking to transfer to another campus should obtain a campus transfer application form from the Arts faculty office, or download it from the Arts administration website.
Cancellation of units
Occasionally, units may be cancelled if there are insufficient enrolments in the units or if, due to some unforeseeable circumstance, there is no staff member to teach the unit. Students will normally be given at least one week's notice of the cancellation.
Course and Unit Restrictions
Except with the permission of the faculty board, a student may not:
- undertake more than four first-year-level units in a semester in first year
- undertake more than 60 points (or 10 units) at first-year level throughout the degree
- count towards their degree more than one of any two units that the faculty regards as having considerable duplication of content
- undertake a unit where it has been failed twice previously, except with the approval of the faculty board, acting on the recommendation of the head of school
- take more than 24 points at first-year level in any one discipline.
Course credit points - exceeding maximum
Students have a responsibility to complete course requirements given in the relevant degree regulations and faculty policies and to not exceed the specified number of credit points.
Students must seek the written approval of the faculty if they wish to enrol in more than the number of credit points described in the degree regulations as necessary for course completion, or for units which will not contribute to course completion.
Other than in exceptional circumstances, this approval will only be granted for enrolment on full-fee basis.
Course Transfers
Students may, after one or more years of study, decide they wish to transfer to another course. Students seeking to transfer to another course should obtain a course transfer application form from the Arts faculty office on any campus, or download it from the Student Services Centre website.
For most arts course transfers, students will need to achieve a credit average or above to be eligible to transfer. Students wishing to transfer to a non-arts administered courses will need to contact the relevant administering faculty.
Part-time or Full-time candidature
Students should be aware that while permission to study part-time is not needed, any enrolment below 18 credit points per semester may result in ineligibility for certain government grants (ie Youth Allowance, Austudy etc).
International students are required to study 24 credit points each semester, except where they are completing their course.
Progression to higher year-level units
Students would normally be required to undertake two first year sequences before progressing to a second year unit. Part-time students wishing to proceed to a second year unit without two first year sequences are advised to see the Co-ordinator for Undergraduate Coursework for advice on course progress.
All students must meet prerequisite requirements as prescribed in the Undergraduate Handbook in the unit description.
Studies in a single discipline
A student wishing to select any or all of the 48 free points from units offered by the Faculty of Arts from the disciplines taken as part of the Arts major, Arts minor or other first year Arts sequence should seek advice from the Faculty of Arts to ensure that any overlaps in disciplines are appropriate. However, in any circumstances, students may not take more than 24 points at first year level in any one discipline.
Timelimit on degree completion
If you are completing a single degree and studying full-time, the normal minimum time for completion is three years; if you are studying part-time or by off-campus learning, it will normally take five to six years. The maximum time allowable for the completion of a single degree within the Faculty of Arts is eight years.
Students undertaking summer semester or accelerated programs must seek permission from the faculty board to complete the degree in less than three years. Applications should be made to the coursework office.
If you are completing a double degree and studying full-time, the normal minimum time for completion is four years, and seven to eight years part-time. The maximum completion time for double degrees is 10 years.
Workload
A normal year's workload for a full-time student for the majority of courses is 48 points (eight units). Students may overload by up to six points per semester in a calendar year. Over-enrolment in first year is not permitted, except for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts Dean's Scholars Program
