What is a Modem Account ?
Whereas every staff member has an Email, Authcate and Novell account created for them by default, modem accounts should be requested through the ArtsIT HelpDesk.
If you have a Modem and/or Modem External account, you will be able to dial in to the Monash modem pool from home and basically use Monash as your ISP (Internet Service Provider). This means that the only cost to you is the cost of the call to Monash. Of course, Monash expects that this facility will be used for Monash related work.
A "Modem" account will provide internal access only. That is, you can access Monash web pages and resources but you cannot access websites external to Monash.
A "Modem External" account will provide complete Internet access (internal and external to Monash).
Note that all students are entitled to a "Modem" account if they wish it (so they can get to Monash web pages and their email from home). Students should see the ITS helpdesk located in the Union building to get a "Modem" account. Postgrad students who are "by research" (rather than "by coursework") are additionally entitled to a "Modem External" account if they wish to have one. This will be added to their student account and will use their normal student login and student authcate account password. Postgrad research students can email a request to helpdesk@arts.monash.edu.au or visit ArtsIT to request one of these (room S410 - south wing - Menzies building - Clayton campus).
